If you want the ultimate in dynamics, scale and control then an active system is the way forward. The ATC SCM40A is a three way floor standing sealed box loudspeaker. The sealed box design works extremely well in most domestic environments and is not fussy about positioning as there is no reflex port. It produces deep well defined and controlled bass that never overpowers unlike some more conventional reflex ported designs. The curved cabinet profile makes it Aesthetically pleasing and as such fits in easily into most domestic settings.
ATC manufacture all three drive units by hand with great care in their production facility near Stroud. It doesn’t matter which model you buy, all the drivers are made with the same attention to detail. This ensures that your speaker will give lasting performance for generations to come. The SCM40A features a built in active crossover network that offers much lower distortion, greater efficiency and greater accuracy than a standard passive crossover. This means that all the power from the three built-in power amplifiers is available for the loudspeaker drivers to use. ATC then tailor each amplifier to suit the individual driver requirements. This model uses the famous ATC 75mm mid driver which is both natural and transparent.
Due to this being an active speaker it means that all you need to complete the system is a high quality source and pre-amplifier. Some obvious choices to go with this speaker are the award winning ATC CDA2 which combines a CD player and pre-amplifier in one box. Another obvious choice is the Naim NAC N-272 which is a combined streamer pre-amplifier. Maybe it is time to consider reducing your box count without any compromise in performance.
